The Story The famed Whalers franchise was created in November 1971 when the World Hockey Association awarded a franchise to an ownership group in Boston. Bolstered by a mostly American roster (very unusual for that era), the Whalers cruised to a WHA championship in their first season. Despite their success, the team was fourth priority at their home Boston Garden behind the NHL Bruins, NBA Celtics and even the AHL Braves.
